Whether referred to as a ‘Cardiac Defibrillator’, an ‘External Defibrillator’ or an ‘Automated Defibrillator’ the meaning is the same. The correct description is an AED; ‘Automated External Defibrillator’.

We are all familiar with the television programmes; as the actor/doctor gives a shock to a casualty using a defibrillator, watching as the casualty’s back arches and the monitor shows their heart return to a normal rhythm. Reality is not like this at all, no dramas showing casualty levitation but the controlled use of AED’s which can in fact lead to spectacular results. Research has shown that the use of an AED may increase the chance of survival by up to 60%. However time is of the essence and with each minute delay in deploying a shock the chances of survival are reduced by up to 10%. It is vital therefore that early intervention should take place quickly.

Ultimately the availability of AED’s together with appropriate training in the workplace/public places/sports clubs and in school is essential. The AED machine is simple to use, voice prompts take the user through each stage step-by-step and cannot be overridden,  a shock cannot be given if the AED does not prompt one which eliminates and possible miss-use. An AED is the only effective treatment for Cardiac Arrest.
